Assignment Six - Prep for Hardware Exam
Next week you will have to look at several computers that are not working and determine what is wrong with them. This is your opportunity to get ready.
Turn on your computer to verify it is in a working state. (Always do this first!)

Devise at least 6 and up to 10 different ways to make your computer malfunction. The methods should be useful for practicing your hardware debugging process.

Configure each bad configuration on your computer. Power up and record what the computer does: What are the hints? What do you look for? You should end up with a cheat sheet for the exam which you can use during the exam.

As a guide I will provide some suggestions. Try not to smoke your computer
  • Missing, broken, cut or unseated cable
  • Missing, defective or unseated memory
  • Defective, misconfigured or disconnected power supply
  • Misconfigured motherboard jumpers or DIP switches
  • Defective or unseated CPU
  • Missing, misconfigured, unconnected, storage device
  • Missing, misconfigured, unseated Video Card
  • Missing, misconfigured, unseated NIC
Reassemble your computer. Turn it on and make sure it works.
