• The Windows Registry is basically a proprietary database for user definable Operating System Parameters

• Microsoft says it is to make more efficient transfers of data to and from the hive, however Linux which still uses text files to do this loads MUCH faster than Windows

• Under normal conditions you should not ever have to go into the Registry. This is where the User Interface stores it's data. Changing the Registry directly is subject to problems
