Contractor Rules

• They control their own work schedule.
• Decide how they will complete their work.
• May work for more than one business at the same time
• Set their own pay or negotiate the price of each individual job.
• May incur the costs associated with doing their job
• like paying for insurance, buying tools, or purchasing parts.
• Pay their own state and federal taxes.
• Are not entitled to:
• workers’ compensation,
• unemployment benefits,
• protections of most workplace safety laws.

If you treat a person contrary to these rules they can be reclassified retroactively as an employee
