The Moody Blues
In the beginning.... There were five. It was the lads from the Birmingham area; Ray Thomas, Graeme Edge, Mike Pinder, Denny Laine, and Clint Warwick
that put together the R&B group that would evolve into the Moody Blues. It was this quintet, during an era in which virtually any British rock band (Thanks to
the "Beat-les" [sic]) had a leg up on catching the eye of major recording labels, that a deal with Decca was cinched. The fact that the five were talented enough
to crank out the multi-nation, million-selling, "Go Now!" in just their second release didn't hurt either.
But, fame plays to a fickle crowd and subsequent single releases failed to capture the same glow from the spotlight. In 1966, Laine and Warwick had had enough.
Off they went to try new avenues. Undaunted, the remaining three sought and captured the interest and abilities of Justin Hayward and John Lodge. The result
being a somewhat revised musical style for the group en masse. Decca Records meanwhile, having plunked a sizable "red ink" investment in the lads and their
uneventful recent efforts, had a renewed interest in "having another go at it" with this new sound. Decca "suits" had the idea that introducing a rock music
approach to a classical work, complete with full orchestra as "backing band," might just make record buyers who, as you recall from the mid-sixties, were ripe
for all sorts of strange new musical concoctions, sit up and take notice.
And, thus... The Moodies' sound we know and love today was born.
