Switch Ingress and Egress

Note: A switch will not allow traffic to be forwarded out the interface it received the traffic

When referencing the action between the frames and the switch the terminology used is:

Ingress – entering the interface (port)

Egress – exiting the interface (port)

A switch forwards based on the ingress (source) interface (port) and the destination MAC address

A switch uses its MAC address table to make forwarding decisions
