CIS 120 4.0 Units - IT Essentials: PC Hardware and Software
(No Prerequisite)
This course introduces computer hardware and software as well as operating systems, networking concepts, mobile devices, IT security and troubleshooting. The online course materials assist students in developing the skills necessary to work as a technician in the field of IT.
Preparation for CompTIAs A+ certification exam is included.

You need access to the Netacad website to do some of the homework for this class
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Assemble components based on customer requirements
  • Install, configure and maintain devices, PC's and software for end users
  • Demonstrate the basics of networking and security
  • Diagnose, resolve and document common hardware and software issues
  • Demonstrate the basics of virtualization, desktop imaging and deployment

GRADING:
Lab Assignments 40 percent of your grade 5 p.m. Friday, May 18th is the deadline for submitting all lab assignments
Cisco Netacad Exams 30 percent of your grade Exams are due anytime between the start of the class and the week they are assigned.
Hands-on Midterm Exam 10 percent of your grade You will have a time limit. I have no problem with using your notes, however, keep in mind, you will not be able to use notes for the Certification Exam.
Final Exam 10 percent of your grade All students must be present on the day of the Final Exam.
If you cannot be present, please make prior arrangements with the instructor.
Attendance on Day of Certification Prep 10 percent of your grade All students must be present on this day.

GRADING POLICY:
You may take this class for either a letter grade or credit/no credit. If you choose to take credit/no credit, you need a grade of "D" or better to get credit.

While the instructor had no objection to, and in fact, encourages you to work with other students on the assigned homework, wholesale copying of someone else's work will not be tolerated. If you are observed using any material other than your own, you will receive a score of zero for those assignments or final project.

CLASS RULES:
Students attending lectures are entitled to a disruption free, respectful environment. First violation of the following class rules will result in a warning; second offense a two-day suspension and third offense may result in a suspension from the class.
  • Cell phones and electronic music devices (even with headphones) may not be operated in the classroom at any time.
  • Talking disruptively to other students during the lecture is not permitted.
